Introducing the Linear Autism Method™

The LAM™ method is the result of evidence-informed best practices derived from clinical, therapeutic, and school environments over 25 years. It has been developed by Timothy Wahlberg, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist, Clinical Director for the National Autism Academy, and founder of Wahlberg Psychological Services in St. Charles, IL.

Dr Wahlberg is renowned for his work with ASD diagnosed individuals and in conjunction with Jeanne Beard, Founder of the National Autism Academy, make available immeasurable support, training, and the most current information available on autism for professionals and families. Together, they truly are the ‘dynamic duo’ for individuals of all ages living on the spectrum, their loved ones who seek to support, understand and manage the everyday challenges of autism, and the professionals serving them.

This training captures the essence of Dr. Wahlberg’s Linear Autism Method™ (LAM) which is a unique therapeutic model for understanding the ASD client, and for learning effective tools and interventions which help them develop functional skills. The goal of LAM is always to help the individual with ASD become “happy and functional;” to reach their highest potential in life. At its core, this training embraces the dignity and worth of every ASD individual and the relevance of social success and functional competency to their quality of life, regardless of the degree of impairment.

The 9 Classes that comprise this course provide in-depth training for understanding the neuro-irregularities and social disability of autism. The myriad tools derived from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dr. Wahlberg’s Control Theory of Autism embrace a Whole Systems approach for working collaboratively with the client, family and school for continuity of progress and success within the home and community. While the term ‘child’ is referenced throughout the training, this program is equally applicable to individuals of all ages and levels of ASD impairment.

By incorporating these proven methods into your practice, your therapeutic effectiveness with ASD clients, and the likelihood for positive results will increase, dramatically in many cases. LAM’s approach can be used as an adjunct to other treatments you may already be using with ASD clients and individuals with dual diagnoses.

While therapeutic work with clients with ASD and their families is challenging, it is undeniably worthy of your effort in creating the successful outcomes absolutely within reach for those living on the spectrum. We thank you for your dedication and important endeavors in this area.

Class 1: The Perspective that Works: Introduction to the Linear Autism Method

This class provides mental health practitioner’s introductory principles and frameworks on which the Linear Autism Method is based, and successful interventions are created. You will gain understanding of the Control Theory of Autism, and how linear thinking is different from abstract thinking. These concepts serve as a foundation in using LAM to establish a successful protocol that will allow you to leverage new therapeutic strategies and better support your ASD client’s functional success.

Class 2: Understanding and Managing the Drivers Behind Autistic Behavior using LAM.

This class provides the LAM basics of how autistic brain neurology is linked to behavior and the resulting thinking  and world view of the person on the autism spectrum. This is the 2nd class in the series of 9 will expand on the Control Theory of Autism, and managing behavior to create improved functionality through neurological regulation and LAM strategies.

Class 3: The ASD Client’s View of the World Using LAM: Strategies for Effective Connection

The purpose of this class is to provide an understanding of the 7 common thinking patterns identified by LAM that arise as a result of the linear neurological architecture of the brain of those with autism, and through which their understanding of the world is filtered.  In class 3 in a series of 9, we will discuss how this unique world view develops, and how these ways of thinking shape behavior. This will serve as a guide for you in creating effective interventions.

Class 4: Managing the Problems of a Social Disability with LAM

This class examines autism as a social disability through the lens of LAM principles, how those social challenges develop, and how they influence behavior. This class will also teach LAM based strategies to help the individual overcome those challenges.

Class 5: Motivating Children with Autism with LAM

This class will provide the unique and clear LAM interpretation of motivation in those with autism, clearly defining LAM strategies to motivate them to comply with requests, complete tasks, and follow the rules. Class 5 of 9 will support the therapist’s efforts to stimulate interest and participation, gain cooperation, and increase compliance in general.

Class 6: Understanding and Conquering the Executive Functioning Deficits with LAM

Learn to recognize how linear thinking creates the underpinnings of the executive functioning deficits of individuals with autism. It will also serve as a guide for you in establishing LAM-based treatment strategies that will increase your ASD clients’ success in therapy and life. It will also support you by breaking down the factors that contribute to executive functioning so that they can be addressed individually using LAM interventions.

Class 7: LAM Explains Why Communicating Effectively is so Difficult and How to Make it Easier

This class explores communication through the linear method and provides strategies for effective communication, tips about how to teach abstract concepts, and an explanation of why meaning gets lost in the minds of individuals with ASD.  Implementing these LAM approaches greatly increases the client’s overall comprehension and their ability to respond appropriately, which helps the individual become more functional in all environments.

Class 8: LAM’s Successful Therapeutic Model For Autism Treatment

The purpose of this class is to define the therapeutic model that is clinically successful in treating autism, and discuss how autism treatment may differ from conventional treatment models.

Class 9: Diagnosing Autism

This class supports the clinical practitioner diagnosing autism, in using LAM to more accurately recognize the subtle signs that an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis would be more appropriate than other diagnoses.

This helps diagnose higher functioning individuals who are often mis-diagnosed, which is the largest growth area in autism. The Linear Autism Method™ and LAM™ are registered trademarks and may be used only by permission.
